Appalachian Trail test rt 7 to rt 50 – 14.7 miles!

We wanted a test of endurance and strength, so onto the “roller coaster” part of the Appalachian Trail. This section goes from Rt 7 to Rt 50 and equals 14.7 miles. If you drive the two points it equals 10.3 miles, the extra comes from going up and down. This trip equals the distance that we will travel hiking Half Dome in Yosemite. As for me (John) – it kicked my butt!

  1. Guys,

I saw your blog on the Appalachian Trail. Although I grew up in Falls Church and know Rt 7/50…I’ve never hiked the Appalachian. However I KNOW Half Dome . A Noble goal. The Half Dome hike is a superb adventure. I’ve done it 23 times. The views and sense of accomplishment are worth it. Folks need to prepare though…it’s not a walk-in-the-park. Water, boots, hiking poles and gloves for the cables – and be in top shape!

I’ve written the only hiking guide to Half Dome and suggest it for you. It is called “One Best Hike: Yosemite’s Half Dome” published by Wilderness Press. See my website. The trick is to train, leave early (5:30 am) and be at the cables before 11 am. They are clogged after that.

The round trip is 15.5 miles but you are going up up up 4700 feet then down….plus the climax is the 900 foot pull up the cables at a 45 degree. Yes, it will kick your butt. If you are planning a Yosemite trip – you MUST find steep hills and hike them – a lot. Then do some more. Really. Good luck

  2. From John:
Thanks for the comment Rick. My brother is the hiker for sure and guess what he gave me to read? A copy of your book!

We are a little behind in the prep area (some hiking, mainly mountain bike riding) and I am the weaker link as my brother is in better shape and has hiked/climbed Half Dome before. We plan to capture the journey through pictures and video, so this blog might be a help to others. We leave in ten days so our time is running short, but we are excited to make the journey together and capture our story for others to experience it with us. Thanks again for the comment and stay in touch!
